A little LC8 Tech Talk:
2005.5 KTM Adventure 950
 Chasing Excessive Engine Noise
by Dieseljo

I purchased this motorcycle with 8,000 (well cared for) miles from the original owner.
At 10,600 miles I had the (by now) classic water pump shaft (seal) failure. Only to be noticed by a flickering oil psi light when the engine was up to temp (warm). The engine oil (when viewed with the human eye) did not look milky/coolant deluded. NOTE: With this engine, the paper type (stock) oil filter is one of two ways, in identifying a leaky water pump seal (before you destroy your engine.) Why? Because the paper filter clogs easily with coolant, reducing oil psi, turning on your oil psi light and drawing your attention to the problem. Or you could purchase a CJDesigns clear clutch cover, then you can see the moisture build up on the clear lexan face of…

We are really excited for this year’s Trans-Wisconsin Adventure Trail Ride!  This year we have 12 riders attending this event.

So, what’s the scoop with this ride? The Trans-Wisconsin Adventure Trail (affectionately abbreviated to the TWAT ride) is a 540+ mile ride across Wisconsin.  A few of our good friends put together a connecting route between the South and North parts of the state.  Over the years, we’ve added our own favorite trails.  You can find the published TWAT ride here: http://www.lonewolfexpeditions.com/twat.html.   This ride has evolved into an annual event at CJ Designs, with this year being our 3rd Spring ride.  We’ve also done 2 Fall rides.  The great thing is, there are so many trails and cool things to see/do/ride in Wisconsin, that the trip is a little different each time.

This year, our ride will be a little longer than previous years; 5 days. The route will be about 1400 miles.  Our rough itinerary…

Dual Sport Warehouse and CJ Designs have developed a couple of light mounting options for KTM 990’s and 690’s that will give you the ability to mount Rigid Industries light bars or individual “Dually” lights.

KTM 690 Enduro R with Rigid Industries 6" light bar SR06SW

This setup on the KTM 690 makes a huge difference in night time lighting.  The 690 has a terrible 35 watt standard headlight and at night you feel like you’re riding by candlelight.  This version Rigid 6″ light bar puts out 1920 lumens in a spot pattern and it really makes an amazing difference.  You can see down the road and it helps to light up the ditch lines as well.  I’m going to wire this into my high beam and then when I flip to low beams it won’t blind oncoming traffic (it is blinding!).

Custom built light mount brackets - Dual Sport Warehouse will make these available if there is any interest.

For the 690 mounts we made up some fairly simple 1/8″ aluminum brackets that tie into the triple clamp mounts and provide a sturdy mounting point for the 6″ light bar.  You can also mount individual lights on each side if you prefer.  The light bar does block the bottom of the stock headlight but it has very little noticeable effect except on high beam and then the LED light will be on so it doesn’t matter.

The KTM 990 Adventure has a much better stock headlight than the 690 but can still use some help on dark nights or off-road in the middle of nowhere.  CJ Designs came up with a solution for this one that you can either mount a light bar or a pair or “Dually” lights.

KTM 990 Adventure with Rigid Industries 10' light bar SR10CW - Spot/flood combo

This bike was used to prototype the brackets for the Rigid 10″ light bar and it already had some 3′ LED lights mounted on CJD fork mount brackets.  This thing puts out lots of light in this configuration.  Check out http://www.rigidindustries.com for all the details on Rigid LED light specs.

This bike is set up with the CJ Designs brackets and individual Dually lights that put out 1,300 lumens each.  You can also get the newer “D2” Dually and those put out 2,300 lumens each!  That will brighten up your life.  Watch for new updates on www.dualsportwarehouse.com as these brackets and the new single row Rigid lights are loaded on the site.  We will be putting together some package deals to make it an easy install.

The WI DNR is proposing and endorsing a 25 mph speed limit restriction on all WI frozen lakes.  This is on the agenda for their spring hearings being held in every county in the state on Monday, April 9th at 7:00 pm.  See the locations and times posted below. The question #65 appears on page 25 of their questionaire as follows:

QUESTION 65. Create a maximum of 25 mph on Frozen Water (# 180311)

(requires legislation)

Winter outdoor recreation activities are increasing in popularity and there are a growing number of users on the frozen waters of the state. Anglers, snowmobilers, ATVers, cross-country skiers, ice skaters, and Wisconsinites of all ages are often found simultaneously enjoying the frozen waters of the state. Cars, trucks, snowmobiles, and ATV’s driving and riding on the frozen surface, can create safety hazards and issues for other users. Sometimes these vehicles are moving at high speeds and within close proximity to persons, other vehicles, or structures. Vehicles moving at high speeds also contribute to some degree to the deterioration of ice conditions due to the energy wave created under the surface of the ice. ATV’s and snowmobiles are currently required to slow to 10 mph on the ice when within 100 feet of a person not on a motorized vehicle or within 100 feet of an ice shanty. Speed limits for licensed motor vehicles (cars, trucks, etc) on the frozen waters of the state are not regulated on a statewide basis by state law and only some municipalities have local regulations. This proposal would create consistent regulations for all licensed motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, etc) on the frozen waters of the state.

Would you support legislation creating a maximum speed limit of 25 mph for all licensed motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, etc) travelling on frozen waters of the state unless on a designated state or club marked trail?

This will affect motorcycle ice riding, snowmobiles and atv’s.  It will effectively ban any sport ice riding.  If at all possible, show up at the meeting in your county and vote against this proposal.  Check for your time and location on the list below:
